ABOUT
Maggie
Broekman
For over 35 years, Maggie has helped riders and horses realize their maximum potential.
Based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Maggie is available for instruction and training in dressage, jumping, and eventing as well as coaching at shows.
A German-licensed trainer (Bereiter FN) and FEI trainer/rider, once student of Klaus Balkenhol ¹, Wolf Kröber, Founder of the original Equitana-Germany, Harry Bold and more, Maggie emphasizes riding the horse from the back to the front/hand, using the six points of education system, the Pyramid = Scale of Education. It is from this foundation and by following the German Training Scale that both the horse and student she works with achieve their goals.
During the last years, all around the world, Maggie has noticed/ witnessed a more "modern" riding style. More pressure from the rider to the horse, often with nose behind the vertical, spectacular movements from shoulders, meaning: unnaturally high knee movements (knee = in layman’s terms, actually it is the wrist of the forelegs). Exaggerated stretching of the foreleg during extended trot, resulting in little engagement of horses back and hind legs. The lack of patience is the culprit of the "newer" riding style, which is mostly not healthy for the horse, physically and psychosocially.
Because Maggie takes a little more time building the foundation (going by the principles of the Pyramid), it is healthier in the long run for horse and rider (physically and mentally).
She also offers photoshoots, to document the students/ horses in lessons to show the right and wrongs during a lesson right away.
In addition she offers portraits of horses (photography and paintings). See her work under MY WORK.
